Hilary Sheinbaum on Adidas Sambas & Babka
Plus, the "Going Dry" author on the best non-alcoholic bevs.
Not going to lie, friends. This week has been a little rough. Nothing dire—just a lot of work and life stuff making for long days. But there’s a lot to look forward to, including a much needed girls trip this weekend, and several unwatched episodes of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives (not to mention, the new season of RHOSLC is also back next week—what a time for fans of LDS-based drama).
This week, I’m excited to welcome Hilary Sheinbaum, journalist, GoingDry.co founder, and author of three books including Going Dry: a Workbook, which was just published last week. Big mazel!! I first met Hilary a few years back when I crashed her birthday party (oops) with my friend Jonathan, so to then be at her book party years later is very full circle.
Ahead, find out Hilary’s current non-alcoholic bev choices (she’s going dry, after all), the celeb-approved eye masks she loves, and more.
Meet the Gatekeeper:
Name: Hilary Sheinbaum
Calls home: New York City
In a nutshell: Reader, do-er, human
What was the last great meal you ate?
The last great thing I ate was the Nutella babka from Breads Bakery, which qualifies as girl dinner if you eat more than 1/4 of a loaf. The last great meal (like an actual meal and not a dessert), would have to be Tia Carmen in Phoenix, when I was visiting for a wedding. That's tied with Four Seasons Jackson Hole, where they served non-alcoholic wine with dinner. Giesen 0% is on the menu in the Four Seasons Ascent Lounge. I'm a non-alcoholic beverage super fan, so that was so much fun. Four Seasons Jackson Hole also has an amazing make-your-own s'mores at the table, which, of course I had to order—and was totally worth it... and, now I'm talking about dessert again.
What’s your current favorite bev?
I love the abundance of non-alcoholic drinks that are available these days. I'm always finding new ones on a site called BetterRhodes.com. One of favorite NA bevs right now is Do'Mo (a non-alcoholic elixir with 17 functional ingredients), and I drink 1-2 OLIPOPs a day for gut health (lemon-lime flavor is my jam). [Editor’s note: I LOVE GRAPE OLIPOP!!! SPONSOR US!!]
What was the last link you sent someone?
My friend sent me this Instagram post by @MelissaWoodHealth. I love ice cream (so much) but I don't consume a ton of dairy these days. A different friend gifted me a Ninja Creami, so we were talking about healthy ice cream recipes, and this was the next text in our thread.
What is the seemingly random product you can’t stop talking about?
My Brava. I am obsessed. It's a countertop oven that bakes, air fries, sears, makes eggs, etc. etc. etc. I've had one since 2018-ish, and it's my favorite thing. It's basically an East Bake Oven for adults. I talk to everyone about it. I wrote an article about it. I think the company should contract me as a salesperson because I've convinced a handful of people to buy it.
What’s the item you wear most in your closet?
Right now, my Adidas Sambas. They're just so easy to slip on and off, and they go with everything in my summer wardrobe (which is typically workout clothes, sun dresses and the like).
What’s your favorite place to shop?
I'm a big Alice + Olivia fan. Their clothes fit me so well and no matter the season, I want to buy no fewer than half of what's in the store. Stacey Bendet is iconic. I also have 10 things in my Revolve online cart at the moment—sometimes I get lost while searching for something I need (a white dress) and end up piling all the things I want (other color dresses) into said cart. There's just so much to choose from, and I'm a sucker for reading the reviews—which can be very telling by the way!
What’s your desert island beauty pick?
If I'm on a desert island, my beauty pick is sunscreen, for sure. I will not be risking skin damage! But, truthfully, my recent obsession is YSE “Overachiever” Beauty Brightening Eye Masks. They stay on my face and they do what they say they are going to do. Molly Sims is the founder. Between podcasting, mom'ing, producing, running a beauty brand, she really does it all. Respect!
You have a free day to do anything in your city. What’s on the agenda?
Sleep! Ha. (Sort of kidding.) Outside my apartment: a BARRY's class or hitting tennis balls at Court 16 with a friend. Le Botaniste for an organic, healthy lunch. Grabbing dinner with friends, or taking a walk on the West Side Highway.
