Katie Stone on Baggy Jeans & Electrolytes
Plus, the iconic book she's in the middle of reading.
How’s everyone doing? Keeping cool? Pretending your news apps don’t exist? Great, same.
I’ve been spending my free time bingeing America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (read my breakdown of their beauty routines for InStyle here) and furniture shopping. Finding a coffee table that fits my NYC apartment (and isn’t the curséd West Elm storage table) is an entire side hustle. I’ve also been distracting myself with summer shopping, and hit buy on this lil Everlane dress (currently 40% off) and these Still Here-esque Abercrombie shorts.
ALSO! I’m very overdue in telling y’all about the latest freelancer event Erica Metzger and I threw in May: We called it “Boost Your Bylines,” as it was themed around, well, getting more work during uncertain times. Erica moderated an incredible editor panel with Asia Milia Ware (The Cut), Dianna Mazzone Singh (Allure), and Holly Rhue (Byrdie), with amazing takeaways to continue cultivating a thriving editor-freelancer ecosystem. We couldn’t have done it without our sponsor Mary Kay, who offered touchups thanks to celebrity makeup artist Kirin Bhatty, and to Loveweld for hosting us in their Soho studio (and gifting custom rings!).
Interested in sponsoring a future event? Feel free to reach out to Erica and me!
Now, let’s get into the latest and greatest: This week’s guest is
, a brand consultant and freelance writer. You’ve seen her work in The Strategist, WSJ, and in her own newsletter, Plant Based—and now, she’s sharing her faves. Ahead, find out the electrolytes she ranks above the rest, the iconic Nora Ephron book she’s reading, and more.Meet the Gatekeeper:
Name: Katie Stone
Calls home: New York
In a nutshell: New Yorker, oldest daughter
What was the last great meal you ate?
Ooof good question. I went to Saint Julivert in Cobble Hill last week and I had some amazing seafood. Scallop shiso tacos, shrimp crudo, gooseneck barnacles (!!), oyster mushroom noodles... highly recommend.
What's your current favorite little treat?
Any of Hu Kitchen's dark chocolate bars. Also their dark chocolate and vanilla bean covered cashews.
What do you do when you need a pick-me-up?
This sounds so annoying but I literally drink a glass of electrolyte water. I'm obsessed with the Pink Yuzu flavor from Pludo—they're the cleanest, most delicious electrolytes on the market. (I've literally tried all of them.)
What’s the item you wear most in your closet?
Agolde Low-Slung Baggy Jeans. I'm a pretty casual person, so I wear jeans more often than not. These are SO comfortable (I'm wearing them on a plane right now) and they go with pretty much every top I own.
What’s your favorite place to shop?
SSENSE. First, as a brand dork, their personality is so consistent across every touchpoint—editorial, social, the site itself. I'm always finding out about new designers just by scrolling through the selection, but it's balanced so well with tried-and-true brands like Nike. I sound like a spokesperson but I wish I was.
What's your current desert island beauty product?
Activist Manuka Honey Mask!
What's the last book you weren't able to put down?
Currently in the middle of it—Heartburn by Nora Ephron. The character's voice is so distinct, which makes it such a visceral experience to read the book (and live her life) through her perspective. There's drama, there's romance, and it's not tooooo serious.
What's your current favorite scent?
Abel's Cyan Nori! Always!
