Sarah Shapiro on BonBon & Striped Cashmere
Plus, the Retail Diary founder shares her Bay Area staples.
Hello!
I don’t know about y’all, but I forgot how chaotic fall can get? Pros: I am simply obsessed with wearing light sweaters. Can’t get enough of it. And Bravo has blessed us with the return of not one but three Housewives franchises all at once. (It’s borderline too many, but you will not find me complaining.) Cons: We’re already well into the “holiday season” in lifestyle journalism world, and it’s a very busy time; but I suppose it’s better to be too busy than not busy enough, right?
With that said, I’m keeping my intro short and sweet this week! Introducing this week’s guest,
: Sarah is a retail consultant and the founder/journalist behind , one of my favorite Substacks. For those who don’t follow, you should be: Sarah goes deep on the latest retail trends. It’s a MUST if you’re “in the industry,” but also a great read if you’re not. Plus, she always has lots of discount codes!Ahead, Sarah shares her favorite Bay Area haunts, sweet-tooth fix, and much more.
*In light of the devastating hurricanes across the Southeast, I will be donating affiliate revenue from today’s newsletter to World Central Kitchen. If you’re interested in donating further, I found this list of resources helpful.
Meet the Gatekeeper:
Name: Sarah Shapiro
Calls home: Lafayette, California
In a nutshell: Night owl, fashion & retail obsessed, cool friend but uncool mom (according to my kids)
What was the last great meal you ate?
I had an amazing cacio e pepe from three.onefour in Oakland recently and it was unreal. They make it table side in the giant pecorino romano wheel of cheese and it is beyond delicious.
What was the last link you sent someone?
Honestly, a link to my husband so we could reorder a part for our dryer. Not exciting at all. Before that it was a link to the @read_receipts account. I love the round-ups. She's so creative and it makes me laugh.
What’s the seemingly random product you can’t stop talking about?
Candy salad from BonBon NYC. I have a major sweet tooth.
What’s the item you wear most in your closet?
Lately these two items: Donni Kick Flare Pants (I own two colors) and La Ligne Lean Lines Sweater in Black with White Stripes. The Kick Flare Pants are so comfortable and easy. Can be dressed up or down. I wear them on the weekend to run errands & go to my kids games or I wear for WFH. The answer for what to wear always seem to be these pants. Similar with the La Ligne sweater. I love the fit and weight of this cashmere sweater.
What’s your favorite place to shop?
In the Bay Area it is Marin Country Mart. It is such an enjoyable experience—they have a great mix of restaurants (I love Souvla, Farmshop, Loveski and Rustic Bakery) and shops. Hero Shop has an amazing curation and fantastic trunk shows. La Ligne is there, I love The RealReal to see what pieces that have in store and how they curate the racks. Clic and Hudson Grace have beautiful home goods.
What’s your current beauty obsession?
Lately my obsession is Roz Milk Hair Serum. I use it post-wash to style and its been a good routine for me lately. Frizz-free and calmer waves/curls. Supergoop! Glow Screen in Sunrise I have been wearing every day for years. If we are talking desert island pick I can't go without Aquaphor. [Ed note: You can get 20% off on all all Roz products with code LINDY20]
What’s your current favorite snack or drink, and why?
Diet Coke. I'm never without a cold can and I manage inventory at my house to make sure I'm well stocked. I keep an emergency can in my handbag too. [Ed note: Emergency Diet Coke!!!]
