As a freelance beauty and lifestyle writer, I’ve been thinking about how I can reclaim my own work.
Enter Gatekeeping, a shopping(-ish) newsletter that will arrive in your inbox every other Wednesday.
I’ve been fascinated with this idea that people like to “gatekeep” their favorite places and things—a.k.a. keep them close to the vest— because they don’t want them to become too popular. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, some people (on TikTok, for instance) will do the opposite, revealing so-called “secret” spots and causing products to sell out in hours. My goal with this newsletter is to be a kind of middle ground; inclusive and informative, without blowing up anyone’s spot.
OK, so what is it tho?
Each volume will feature a different tastemaker sharing the items, shops, restaurants, and recipes they swear by. And then, because I can’t help myself, I’ll likely sprinkle in some of my current obsessions too (as is my right as the proprietor of this establishment). My hope is that Gatekeeping feels like reading your favorite page in your favorite magazine—you know, that one where you can’t dog-ear enough things.
Paid subscribers receive an additional newsletter in the off weeks, including gift guides, recommendations from yours truly, and bonus content from guests (think of them as deleted scenes).
I like knowing stuff. How do I get it?
A basic subscription to Gatekeeping is free, and a paid subscription starts at $5/month, or $50/year. (Affiliate links are also used on some items, but that in no way makes them less awesome.) I also offer a referral program; when friends use your referral link to subscribe—at any level, free or paid—you’ll get comped paid access. Here’s how it works:
3 referrals = 1 month free
5 referrals = 3 months free
15 referrals = 6 months free
Can I sponsor Gatekeeping?
Uh, yeah! This newsletter is very much open for business to like-minded partners. Please feel free to inquire either by responding to the newsletter via email, or through the contact form on my website. A press kit is also available by request.
